Iraq: America seeks an exit strategy with Sunnis - Shiites and Kurds perplexed and upset
Bush Administration is eager to suppress the insurgency led by foreign fighters in Iraq by negotiating an exit strategy with the Sunnis. Sunnis want the same too because that provides them a leg up in the process. But that makes Kurds and Shiites disillusioned, perplexed and upset. Their ally United States has started putting the Sunnis in the front again.
Sunni moderates look at this as an opportunity to get their nation back under the Sunni umbrella. The current Government under the control of Kurds and Shiites is not a happy camper with the new set of ongoing negotiations. Sunnis want part of former Baathists back while current Government wants those Baathists out.
The Iraqi government has had no role in recent negotiations between the United States and Iraqi insurgent leaders, Iraqi President Jalal Talabani said on June 29. Talabani added that U.S. Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld is the defense minister of the United States, not of Iraq.
