Chidambarm allows separatists to consult Pak – the biggest mistake?
Bharat Ratnagar
Nov. 7, 2009

While Chidambaram opened up the secret rendezvous with the separatists with a clear permission of the Prime Minister, sources said Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee, Defence Minister A. K. Antony did not agree.National Security Adviser M K Narayanan have expressed reservations at such engagements.

It is not for the first time that Dr Manmohan Singh has approved secret deals with the separatists to persuade them to come on the negotiation table to look for a solution to the Kashmir violence. In another instance of quiet diplomacy in January 2006, NSA Naryanan had met US-based expatriate Kashmiri Farooq Kathwari, known for his Kashmir Study Group (KSG) proposals to settle Kashmir issue. Mirwaiz also had a secret meeting with then government's interlocutor N N Vohra in December 2006. Vohra is now governor of Jammu and Kashmir. He is reported to have kept up his rapport with the separatists and provided feedbacks to Dr Manmohan Singh that prompted the latter to think that it is now the time to resume talks with them.
