I am entirely innocent and will vigorously defend myself and our firm: Raj Rajaratnam
All eyes are on the South Asian billionaire. Will America allow South Asians really succeed financially? Will America use desi to get rid of succesful desis?
Rajaratnam sent a letter to investors and employees reiterating his innosense. “I am entirely innocent and will vigorously defend myself and our firm,” Rajaratnam, 52, said in the letter. “As I move forward on my defense, I want to assure you that our commitment to our investors and employees will remain unwavering.”
According to the Wall Street Journal, Redemption requests totaled $1.3 billion. That can break the backbone of the South Asian firm.
President Obama had announced his appointment months earlier that Mr. Preet Bharara, a desi brought up in US is the new Manhattan US Attorney. Mr. Bhara had been vetted in a Senate hearing. The speed with which the India-born Bharara moved to bust an alleged insider trading racket of desi Raj within days of his swearing in has upheld the widespread previews that he's a man on a mission. The fact that the bust involved at least three ''desis,'' including Sri Lankan billionaire Raj Rajaratnam and Indian-Americans Anil Kumar and Rajeev Goel in what Bharara says is a $20 million scam, has only added to his already considerable allure.
A naturalized American, Preetinder S Bharara was born in Ferozepur, Punjab, and moved with his parents to the US in 1970 when he was an infant. He grew up in New Jersey and graduated from Harvard in 1990 and Columbia Law School in 1993, before embarking on a legal and political path.
