Police helicopter brought down by warring drug gangs in Rio violence – what’s the fate of 2016 Olympics?
The Brazilian Police is battling the warring drug gangs in Rio de Janeiro. The world watches in total astonishments as Brazilian officials scramble to defend their prized asset of 2016 Olympics prospects.
At least 14 people died in a weekend of violence and more than 100 are injured. A police helicopter was brought down by the Brazilian drug gangs.
The rival drug gangs started fihting after the Comando Vermelho (Red Command), invaded a hilltop shantytown controlled by a rival gang, Amigos dos Amigos (Friends of the Friends). Many Brazilians residents fled the ensuing gun battle and demanded help from Brazilian police and miliatry.
According to José Mariano Beltrame, Rio de Janeiro state security secretary, Brazilian authorities knew about the drug war and planned attack of one group on the other but could not stop the same because of the safety of the innocent civilians.
That can be alarming to the Olympic committee. What happens if because of civilian safety the same drug gangs try to hijack the Olympic games?
Tarso Genro, the Berazilian justice minister has assured the Olympic committee that the Brazilian Government will make sure crime prevention is given priority and the game is safe and sound.
