India allows Indian Air Force to shoot at the Maoists – a wrong decision that India will repent later, here is why
Is it good to use Air Force and Military to shoot at Maoists in India? Is it any good to do that even for self-defense? History in Nepal says it is not a great idea.
Nepal’s King allowed the Military to shoot at the Maoists in self-defense. Soon the Nepalese military found the Maoists have acquired armaments from abroad to match the military. Then they found the situation slowly get out of hand as Maoists adopted a policy of hit and run with most sophisticated arms and ammunitions acquired from abroad.
Acting promptly on an IAF request for permission to fire on Maoists if its choppers or aircrew come under attack, defense minister A.K. Antony said on Saturday the air force would be allowed to do so “after evolving necessary safeguards and procedures”.
During combats of any nature, there is no scope of following any safeguards and procedures. The government wants to make sure the rules of engagement do not cause any collateral damage like civilians getting killed in the crossfire. The problem is exactly that. In Nepal, the Maoists used the civilians as the shield to fight. When Nepalese military started combating the Maoists, they found they were killing innocent civilians far more than the Maoists. Maoists then recruited the common people who were angry on the Nepalese military.
India made a mistake. Indian police force and paramilitary forces should have provided the protection to Indian Air Force.
