Germany heads for political crisis as conservatives and the Free Democrats lead with razor thin margin

Sep. 27, 2009

Europe’s largest and most vibtant economy is headed for a political crisis. Merkel and her main challenger, Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier of the Social Democrats, ignored the Islamic threats in their final rallies, focusing instead on the key domestic issues of jobs and economic recovery. On Sunday, both voted at their local polling stations in Berlin, accompanied by their spouses.

"I am hoping for a strong voter turnout and a strengthening of democracy," Steinmeier told reporters.

According to sources from Germany, polls show political stalemate in the coming days as the conservatives and the Free Democrats lead with razor thin margin.

Forming the Government is possible but its effectiveness can be questioned with such thin majorities.

One of the final surveys after voting ended indicated the conservatives could capture 31 percent of the vote, while the Free Democrats were supported by 12 percent. The results of the poll give the two parties hope of a razor-thin majority in parliament over any coalition that Social Democrats could engineer.

The political opposition to the conservatives and their policies socially and internationally is increasing exponentially. Some believe Market did a great job. But equal number of German citizens believes she is just intolerant to the social requirements of the poor and the middleclass.
