Though President Barack Obama dramatically disclosed the existence of a covert Iranian nuclear enrichment site in front of world leaders Friday, it is nothing new to CIA and Western intelligence agencies.

The underground site near the holy city of Qom is a well known fact and well monitored by western intelligence as well as signal intelligence for atleast seven years if not longer.

In July, Mr. Obama asked his staff to prepare a detailed briefing in advance of this week's U.N. and Group of 20 meetings. No decision was made about when the briefing would be presented, officials said.

But with Oct. 1 talks with Iran set, White House officials wanted to be in a position to use the evidence as leverage either for negotiations or proceeding down the "pressure track," a senior administration official said.
