Plain resignation a strategy or an internal necessity?
Plain resignation a strategy or an internal necessity?
Jul. 4, 2009

Governor Palin of Alaska wants to challenge US President Barrack Obama in 2012. But her sudden and surprising resignation has stunned the media world. What are the real reasons for her resignation?

Palin's abrupt announcement Friday rattled the Republican Party. Her close supporters are quiet but have left open the possibility of a presidential run.

According to Palin's spokesman, David Murrow, "She's looking forward to serving the public outside the governor's chair.” In a hastily arranged news conference at her home in Wasilla, a suburb of Anchorage, Palin said she had decided against running for re-election as Alaska's governor, and believed it was best to leave office even though she had 1.5 years left to her term. Lt. Gov. Sean Parnell will take her place.

Political think tanks question “why such compulsion? Why is she in a hurry? What is she afraid of?” According to Meghan Stapleton, Palin's personal spokeswoman,” the governor will continue to work to bring positive changes as a citizen without a title right now.”

One simple motive can be money. She has the potential to make far more money in the private sector than the $125,000 or so she has been making as governor. She already had a deal with publisher HarperCollins to produce her memoirs, with publication planned for next spring. Multimillion dollar book deals are common for high-profile political figures.

But that does not make any sense if she is really thinking of challenging President Obama. Then what can be the real reason?

Some speculate that she has plenty of skeletons in her closet and wants to burry them before end of 2010. Political realm in Alaska is not free of corruption. She may not like to get into any further corruption scandals.

But that is not the way American politics work. People like to see past performance to evaluate the real potential of a Presidential candidate. It is possible that Palin has something to hide and that can be exposed slowly if says in the limelight now.

Is Palin a failure as a Governor? Is she a failed politician? Did her personal life affect the decision to resign from the Governor’s office?
