Medvedev recognises the two Georgian breakaway regions now controlled by Russian army
In a sign of total defiance to Bush Administration, the European Union and the NATO, Russian President Madvedev has on Tuesday signed a decree recognising the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia, the two Georgian breakaway regions now controlled by Russian army after the recent conflict.
Russian recognition comes as no surprise for the breakaway regions. But what surprised many political think tanks is the blantant and resolute stance of Russia in spite of warnings form America and NATO.
NATO Secretary-General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer said the move was ”in direct violation of numerous UN Security Council resolutions regarding Georgia’s territorial integrity, resolutions that Russia itself has endorsed”.
”Russia’s actions in recent weeks call into question Russia’s commitment to peace and security in the Caucasus. Nato firmly supports the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia and calls on Russia to respect these principles,” de Hoop Scheffer said in a statement read out by his spokeswoman.
Mr Medvedev said that the Georgian leadership had brought the crisis upon themselves in an attack on South Ossetia on Aug 7 and 8, to which Russia responded with massive armed intervention that has left them in control of large swathes of Georgia.
“Saakashvili opted for genocide to accomplish his political objectives,” said Mr Medvedev. “By doing so he himself dashed all the hopes for the peaceful coexistence of Ossetians, Abkhazians and Georgians in a single state. The peoples of South Ossetia and Abkhazia have several times spoken out at referendums in favour of independence for their republics”
