UPA nervous about the number game as Muslim MPs quit SP to join BSP
Rita Nair
Jul. 19, 2008

The last moment drama was unexpected for the Congress party and its UPA coalition members. The much questioned Anil Ambani sponsored SP’s general secretary and Rajya Sabha member Shahid Siddiqui, who came in support of the Indo-US nuclear deal ever since the UPA-SP tie up, quit the party and announced his decision to join rival BSP.

Desertions in Samajwadi Party on Saturday sent a jolt through a nervous UPA. Amar Singh alone enjoyed the ‘goodies’ and the ‘orange juice’ from Manmohan Singh is not getting distributed to other SP members. There can be massive abstention among SP members and some will vote against the UPA coalition.

Many Muslim MPs are eager to teach ‘George Bush and Manmohan Singh’ a lesson. They are eager to oppose pro-western Italian born Sonia Gandhi. They are deserting the party of Amar Singh.

SP, which has a strength of 39 Lok Sabha MPs, is already down to 30 with nine rebel MPs -Munawar Hasan, Raj Narain Budholiya and Jai Prakash, and others being joined by SP Baghel.

Some Muslim MPs have alleged that Manmohan Singh and company offered them $6.25 million to vote for UPA coalition.
