India beats South Korea to retain junior Asia cup title against all odds as Indian Hockey Confederation (IHC) gets a reincarnation ‘Hockey India’
The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) and the International Hockey Federation (FIH) on Friday recognised the Indian Hockey Confederation (IHC) as the sole governing body of the sport in the country. In future it will be known as Hockey India.
At the same time, India managed a dramatic fight back to retain the Asia Cup hockey title with a thrilling 3-2 victory over South Korea, utilizing on ace drag flicker Diwakar Ram's brilliance in scoring the match-winner early in the extra time.
The Indians were trailing 0-2 till the 52nd minute of the fast-paced contest before clawing back in a sensational manner with three quick goals to leave the Koreans in a daze.
Indian team fought back in a new sprit not seen for a long time. Indian hockey had its best time in years as its recognition is respected in the field and the board room.
The IOA appointed ad-hoc committee is now in charge of the men's sport. And IOA president Suresh Kalmadi heads the committee. The announced of IHC's recognition was jointly made by Kalmadi and FIH president Els van Breda Vriesman.
"We will recognise the IHC and will extend all kind of support to them. This is a new beginning for Indian hockey," Vriesman told reporters here.
She also said that the FIH has decided to reinstate the 2010 World Cup to New Delhi, following the installation of the new body. The FIH had earlier threatened to take back the World Cup if the IOA failed to clean up the mess in the IHF.
Vriesman also said that the role of Australian Ric Charlesworth as the technical advisor of Indian hockey is over.
