Indian democracy faces its biggest challenge since 1947, as Congress Party gets ready to forge ahead with implementing nuke deal after a loss in trust vote
Hritik Sinha
Jul. 18, 2008

It seems that the Congress Party is failing in the final hours to pull together a clean victory. The Government may lose the confidence vote but try and stay in power to complete the implementation of the nuclear deal with US.

The Congress Party may challenge the constitution of India. They can also impose unilateral emergency rule citing non-patriotic behavior by the Indian Communist. They can also ask RAW and CBI to dig a connection between the communists and China just like George Bush did by alleging Saadm Hussain’s Iraq had WMDs and connection with the Al-Queda.

The PM may be committed to withdrawing the safeguards draft from the IAEA if the government loses the trust vote on July 22, but officials in the government say there’s no need to pull it out irrespective of what happens in the Lok Sabha.

If it goes into cold storage after the trust vote, it’ll be because the Government chose to do so. For, the Government has to only see the agreement through the IAEA board. The next few stages will be spearheaded by the US, not India.
