Sixty MPs are planning to abstain as Congress party counts a five MP margin of victory and Karat pursuing fencers to jump on ‘nays’
The Congress party is hoping that confused ill informed rural MPs will abstain from voting. Some MPs are eager to abstain to save themselves from attacks from either side later on. Congress party according to sources has a razor thin 5 MP margin, less than 1% of the total number of MPs in the Parliament.
The Congress-led UPA is banking on abstentions rather than affirmative support for the July 22 confidence vote. But CPI(M) leader Karat is after these sixty MPs that are planning to hide during the trust vote. Akali leadership has announced that they will vote with the NDA. But reports say the Akalis are under pressure from the expatriate Sikh community that favors the deal and the continuation of the Sikh PM. They may abstain or some of them may abstain.
The tentative UPA count includes 35 firm SP votes with three Members prone to BSP overtures. There lies the real problem. It is possible the thrity five can turn out to be 15 for, 15 against and 5 absent. In that case the Government will fall.
The most likely outcome however is that UPA will win the trust vote by 5 or so MPs. But after the trust vote, the Parliament will be a place of chaos as smaller parties start demanding what congress promised them. The Congress party eventually will voluntarily resign from the UPA leadership.
BJP does want election now. They want more sever inflation news that will come in the winter. Some privately say NDA coalition wants Manmohan to go ahead, make alliance with alleged criminal MPs, win the trust vote and rule for the full term. That will almost guarantee that in the next election UPA will be routed out of India.
