Andaman earthquake related to 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake that caused massive Tsunami – will Andaman disappear under the ocean in 2012?

Jun. 27, 2008

On June 27th, 2008, Andaman is hit with sets of tremors measuring 6.7 and 6.1 on the Richter scale. The earthquake hit the region at around 5:11 pm and 6:39 pm respectively.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center of the United States has issued a bulletin on the Andaman earthquake. A destructive widespread tsunami threat does not exist based on historical earthquake and tsunami data.

However, there is a very small possibility of a local tsunami that could affect coasts located usually no more than a hundred kilometers from the earthquake epicenter. Authorities in the region near the epicenter should be made aware of this possibility.

But experts are now saying that his earthquake is related to the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake was an undersea (subduction) earthquake that occurred at 00:58:53 UTC on December 26, 2004, with an epicentre off the west coast of Sumatra, Indonesia.

It is the extension of the same ridge and the fact that it happened at the far end of Amdaman tells a lot what can happen to tyhese islands in the hundred years.

The 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake was triggered by similar circumstances. With a magnitude of between 9.1 and 9.3, it is the second largest earthquake ever recorded on a seismograph. This earthquake had the longest duration of faulting ever observed, between 8.3 and 10 minutes. It caused the entire planet to vibrate as much as 1 cm (0.5 inches) and triggered other earthquakes as far away as Alaska.

This Andaman earthquake is an extended aftershock or a precusrsor to something big coming in the next several months or years.

Some siesmic models find increasing under water harmonic tremors in the region.

The biggest question : will Anadaman islands disappaer in 2012? According to experts it may get a big one at that time abut it will take decades before anything significant is observed. Sumatra and Andamans can see something cataclysmic in December 2012, accoring some. Like the city of Atlantis, these islands can experiece massive volcanoes, earthquakes and literally disappear in 2012.
